I actually found out about the seed thing after I had already built on top of the ridge. Also, the world was generated pre-1.3.
And I have no clue how to access or even look at seeds. I don't even know what it is.

When you generate a world it is given a "seed". This seed decides how the entire world is generated. In the new 1.3 update you can choose your own seed. So, people can share seeds, and get the same maps. It's pretty cool. There's a thread on the official forums full of seeds.
