edit: With Luin's help, it seems it's a Lysurus mokusin, which is normally known as a Lantern Stinkhorn. You can eat them when they're immature, but once they start 'flowering' they start to smell like dog poo.

It appears to also be in the US (particularly California) and China, but I don't think it was necessarily introduced here recently. Anyway, at the stage you can see in the picture, I'm pretty sure most people wouldn't find its flavour very nice.
