Sweet Jesus dat Bodyhair Triforce.
Awww yeah.

I went to an amethyst mine a few weeks ago with my mother in law, and got myself a bucket of amethyst. Why? For my rock tumbling/rock hounding hobby, of course!

I started tumbling my first barrel of amethyst last week. In total, a good polish takes four weeks to achieve; one week for each grit, and one week of polish.

Here's what shit looks like after the first week at the strongest grit.

When you dump the stuff out of the barrel, you MUST drain the water first. DO NOT dump that shit down the sink. But once all the spare water is off, you can wash the stones off in the sink. They come out all covered in shit...

Then here's how they look all washed off. They aren't really truly smooth yet. They're just wet. You can feel that their surface is rough and when they dry, they come out looking kind of like sea glass.

Not all of it is amethyst this round; my mother in law also gave me some really neat stuff from the lake.

And finally, you get all setup for round two. You have to weigh out the next roughness of grit, and then it all goes back in the barrel with some water, and back on the tumbler for another week.
shinies!
Awesome! What amethyst mine did you go to? Big Grin

This is really quite interesting; you even consider doing your own cutting Luin?
Rose: There's the Panorama Amethyst Mine near Thunder Bay, Ontario. I went there with my mother in law, though I'd been there once before.

Kor: Yes, actually. The main thing preventing me from diving into that right now is the lack of space for a cutting table.
