There was a different Steampunk band at Dragon*Con last year, they're trying to get a slot for Steam Powered Giraffe this year I think.

[/quote]Get a better sub/headphones... it's there around the 1 minute mark, trust me. ???

But I noticed on my speakers at work that there's no bass, which I concluded is because the speakers are old as fuck and there's no subwoofer, so it kinda fails to produce the sounds under 100 Hz.

I noticed the bass, but it's mostly sub 100Hz so it's not going to translate very well. You also lose a TON of headroom by making a mix bass heavy, especially when it's sub-bass like that. Try loosening the filter on the bass and kick so it bleeds more into the mid range where it's lacking right now. I like to give kicks a lot of room well up into 4-500Hz (but cut around 230-250Hz otherwise it can get a little boxy.) It's unbalanced because you have this BIG bottom end in there and the shrill strings at the top. It's actually pretty reminiscent of mixes done in the 80's where a coked out producer would keep demanding more and more highs until the tweeters on their NS-10's would blow. Maybe back off the resonance on the string's filter (or lower the cutoff) to reduce some of that. I would also put a filter on the snare to give it a midrange presence and more of a snap.

As a whole it sounds like a good place to start for a vocal bed if you ever decide to move in that direction.

I totally understand what you mean, typically I wouldn't make something so sub-heavy. My buddy, who plays guitar and is a vocalist, wanted to make something trap-influenced, so I compromised with hip-hop influenced chillstep. Produced the entire thing planning for future vocals though, so that's why the mids are a bit lacking. The snare could be better looking back on it, I definitely need to spend more time on the sounds I choose for drums once I've put everything together. The feedback is much appreciated, thanks Mission. Smile

Being nitpicky here as a musician, but find a better way to synthesize strings, or use a sound that doesn't sound like badly synthesized strings.
spm, you sound like the old heads from the 80s who complained about drum machines.

Haha, I guess I do. I don't really have any problems new mediums for music, after all, one of my favorite genres is experimental. I just think the synth he is using sounds low quality.
hmm, I just figured he was going for the 16-bit sound

The Best 16-Bit Game Music ~SNES~

Funny how we had the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic eras of music, yet today we get to distinguish between 8-bit chiptunes and 16-bit. Fun!

Didn't feel 16-bit-ish enough to me. I figure you just need to pick a side of the road and not walk in the middle. Go full on electronic, or orchestra. I think it would sound cool with the strings.
