Strategy games like Starcraft have really fallen victim to the micro arms race where you have to be able to do shit like this to compete. I'd really love it if they built a game where most of the micro is automated by default and winning comes down to actually having well designed bases and shit.

Yea but this unit based warfare doesn't interest me. I'd prefer a more slowed down strategy+tactic based game. Take the board game of Go. You constantly have to be thinking on two levels - "who is winning this particular fight?" and "who is controlling the whole board?" I think that bigger dynamic is what is often missing from strategy games like Starcraft. I found it in Sons of Solar Empire but that game is a dangerous time sink.
