"Briefing Development Partners on New Features for 2011

February 28, 2011 - Valve, creator of best-selling game franchises (such as Half-Life, Portal, Left 4 Dead, and Counter-Strike) and leading technologies (such as Steam and Source), today disclosed its plans for a new "big picture" mode of Steam which will offer controller support and navigation designed for television interaction. Big picture mode will enable gamers to enjoy Steam and their library of Steam games on more screens throughout the house.
"Our partners and customers have asked us to make Steam available in more places. With the introduction of Steam on the Mac, and soon in Portal 2 on the PS3™, we've done just that," said Doug Lombardi, VP of marketing for Valve. "With big picture mode, gaming opportunities for Steam partners and customers become possible via PCs and Macs on any TV or computer display in the house."

Details regarding big picture mode are among the highlights Valve plans to share with developers and publishers in its partner meetings during GDC this week in San Francisco, Ca.

Coming off the heels of Steam's biggest year, Valve will also share with partners the data it gathered during the hugely successful launch of Steam Microtransactions late last year within its own multiplayer classic, Team Fortress 2. An in-game economy can now be readily created by partners using the microtransactions system within the Steamworks SDK."We've come to understand what type of content sells well in TF2's in-game store, and the various price points at which players value this content," said Robin Walker, game designer at Valve. "Our players are continually teaching us what works and what doesn't. Much of this feedback can be generalized to other titles on Steam, so we're looking forward to sharing what we've learned with partners at GDC. We're also interested in seeing partners get up and running with their own in-game economies, so they can collect game-specific data to inform their design decisions."

Following the 2010 introduction of Steam for Mac, Valve will also discuss the integration of Steam features in its own titles, including its first day-and-date release for Mac, Portal 2. The upcoming Portal 2 release will also be the first to feature Steam on the PlayStation®3, enabling even broader cross-platform interaction and play between PC, Mac and PS3™.

"Steam continues to define itself as more than a digital distribution service by regularly adding new features for developers and customers," said Jason Holtman, director of business development at Valve. "GDC is a great venue for us to share what we're up to, and what's on the horizon for Steamworks. Plus, it's a great opportunity for us to gather feedback from partners, to help inform our plans."

Steam is a leading platform for the delivery and management of games and digital content with over 30 million accounts worldwide. For more information, please visit www.steamgames.com."
#1: I thought you were trolling with that first SS3 picture. I'm flabbergasted.

#2: Steam with a 10-foot display? AKA, competing with every next gen console by using a PC? OMG YES

Bah, can't try the Crysis 2 demo.  Their registration site looks to be down.

Just tried it out. First problems I had were the extremely low FoV and the lack of any advanced graphical settings, but after I got used to the tunnel visions I actually had a whole lot of fun. Yes, it is basically CoD with super powers, but it's those super powers that make the CoD formula actually fun. It's less "hide & seek with guns" too since you have the option of quickly switching into armor mode and either escaping or returning fire. The ability to actually survive or win a fight your opponent had the upper hand on defiantly makes it less rage-inducing games like CoD or Bad Company. The "platformy" nature of the game due to the strength jumps does make things quite a bit more interesting too. One important thing to note though, the game is optimized to hell and back. The game looks much better than Crysis 1, yet I'm still getting around an equal or even higher of a framerate.

Whether or not it'll hold my attention for long I can't really say, but my first season playing several rounds was definitively a lot of fun and I'm really lookin forward to the 22nd, when the full game comes out.

That is brilliant lol
Unreal Engine 3 now has DirectX11 support. I expect UDK to have it within half a year.
Finally got some Crysis time in, even though me and a friend had some connection issues and I was eventually kicked straight back to login, unable to come back in.  Yeah it's still a Scifi CoD, but I really like how it plays on the PC compared to the PC version.  Runs EXTREMELY well, though their settings options don't make much sense.  I played with the default "Gamer" and then tried "Hardcore" and really didn't noticed a difference between them.  Looks really good either way.  Still unsure if I'll be buying it right away. Probably give it a buy in April where I don't have anything to get.
For those with the Crysis 2 demo

+cl_fov=90 +r_DrawNearFoV = 90 +pl_movement.power_sprint_targetFov = 90 +g_skipIntro=1

Gets rid of tunnel vision and skips the 5 intros.
Valve just updated their Steam brochure for developers and publishers. It kind of describes Big Picture mode and Microtransactions.

Edit: Oh God. Steam transfers 30 petabytes of data a month.
crysis 2 is shaping up to be pretty awful

They really should have took to time to make a native version of the demo instead of porting the xbox demo over. All this did was convince people that the full game was also going to be just a console port. Also didn't help they..
 • didn't include full graphic controls in the demo
 • blatently modeled the multiplayer after CoD
 • used gamespy as a mutliplayer platform
 • had so much trouble with log-in issues
 • still haven't fixed their official forums
 • barely said a word about why the demo is as it is

I mean, I still have confidence in the full game, but way to seriously drop the ball on the demo. The leaked beta did nothing but increase sales while the official demo seems to be convincing a lot of people to cancel their pre-orders.

Either way, I'm still excited for the launch. Never really cared about multiplayer anyways in crysis anyways, so that can be as broken as it wants to be and I'll still enjoy the game for its single player.
Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood will not only not require a constant internet access, but will not even requires one when you start the game. It will only check into Ubisoft when you install the title.
Gaben revealed his Steam account credentials today at GDC. The new Steam Guard technology (which you can now try in beta) will protect his account and limit its use to only his computer.

Log in to Steam, go into Steam beta, reset Steam 3 times. I'm not kidding about that last part.
