I can't wrap my head around how they made a movie called "Cowboys and Aliens" unbearably boring.

Because, like Snakes on a Plane, it was all too forced maybe?  I haven't seen Cowboys and Aliens, so I'm just going off what I've heard, but that's what I'd assume is the culprit.

The problem is that they've got this great premise, but they don't do anything with it. It's just a straight-forward western with aliens.
Watched John Carpenter's The Thing. Really good for a horror movie. Grotesque special effects.

That's one of my favourite movies of all time.  There's prequel coming out sometime soon, also called "The Thing".  Takes place three days before the events of the Carpenter film.

Being John Malkovich was beyond terrible. If I could express how much I hated the film in words, I would.

If you enjoyed it, PLEASE EXPLAIN WHY

I can't wrap my mind around how anyone could enjoy such a bleak, mean-spirited, unlikable film such as this, and yet it has critical acclaim! Why!?

Mind giving some reasons?  :-\

I really want to know why this is such a highly rated movie.

Because it's genuinely unique and creative; it strongly conveys emotion.

This exactly.

At first when we started watching it I also hated it. But as it went on the idea became so... fucking awesome that I had to love it. It's so fucking unique. And at the risk of sounding silly, I think it explores the desire to know what it's like to be someone else, to be another sex, to be anything in a way that people might not expect; literally, through their eyes.
I also thought it was funny that after living it up as someone else, when they go back to their own lives, they are "dumped in a ditch". Way to symbol.

Glad to finally get a reason. But I guess I'm in a very small minority here.

holy shit this is intense.

It's pretty good, but I liked Band of Brothers better. To me the story in Band of Brothers flowed better because the characters weren't in different places, The Pacific feels disjointed to me in that sense.
Just watched Captain America.

I can't believe no one told me that the android human torch made a small cameo.  This entire thing was a giant love letter to 1940's comic books.  Even the plotting is the same quick-plotting, 100 pages of exposition in a single-frame style story telling of those real early comics.  Wonderful.

If i had 100 million dollars, i would make a live action recreation of the human torch/namor fight over new york city.
