You could make drawings from some of my parts.
on the other hand, you get to play with a plasma cnc.

grats, duck. doing 3d design will be a very lucrative skill as we head into the 3d printed age.

So, I got a job. A massively underpaid job, but it yields experience and money, both of which I lack. Because I got to meet company lawyers on my interview, I won't go into much detail, but it's a 1hr commute each way. The real kicker? Job description in a nutshell: I make drawings/models of parts, so that I can cut parts from said drawings/models. Apparently when a local fab shop upped their rates, my company decided to start making their own parts. Only, they don't have any copies of the drawings, and don't want to ask for them back.

This was going to go into the FML thread, because the job seems so dumb: "Make drawings from parts, then make parts from drawings." But then I just realized, I now get to claim I'm a reverse-engineer. Maybe the job isn't quite so dumb after all. Current plan is to stick around for the 90-day eval period before either negotiating for not-completely-pathetic compensation, or leveraging experience in drilling to hopefully transition to a bigger company in O&G.

My workstation is still a complete turd that crashes out on anything not resembling very basic boolean geometry though, so that sucks. "Why don't you model the threads/gears/knurling?" C'est la vie

First up: Holy shit it's duck
Second: My god where do you people keep resurfacing from?
Third: Basically if you become innefficient at your job you can claim it is your workstation, and even argue (pitch a fit, raise your voice do whatever), that if they want accurate 3D rendering and parts engineering then they need something newer than the year Steve Jobs was kicked out of Apple (and if they look at you confused that's when you know they're not knowledgeable enough to be telling you what to do).

Blame rummy for providing the impetus for my comeback. Though it probably won't be much of one, life is busy, frustrating, and busy.

As to point the third: If I felt personally vested in the company, maybe I would do that. But I am VERY green with respect to personnel, and the owner is keen on reminding everyone how much money it costs to keep his company afloat. That said, they just dumped a ton of money on a cnc plasma table, and they are counting on me to put it through it's paces, so I'll definitely bring it up after the initial 90 days..

The first job I got out of school, I was very undervalued and had a 2 hour commute, stick with it for two years, then either move up the ladder or move on. It will be very good experience

A bit of an update: I've had 3 companies call me for interviews and 2nd interviews since taking this job. Shit's god damn annoying, where were they for the last 7 months. Also, idk how bad your first job was, but I'm making less than half the average for a graduate mechE. I'm not claiming I'm necessarily entitled to the average, but 1hr commute each way for less than half is pretty discouraging.

I feel bad fielding interviews from other companies (I didn't intend to bail this fast, and I feel like I owe something to them since they're the first company to throw me a bone) but man, when these other jobs pay at a minimum twice what I'm making, and are in major metros like Houston and Austin, I can't justify ignoring them, even if it burns bridges. Oh well, c'est la vie.

Also rummy: It's a pretty janky 2d plasma cutter. During interviews, I was told they were buying a 5-axis machine, so I'm super disappointed to find out the owner couldn't loosen the purse strings as much as he had initially let on. Not terribly exciting, but a fun toy for a little while. I almost landed a job in Austin a couple months back, a Techshop membership would've been WAY fucking cooler.

All that said, I'd rather be on the floor,in the field, or in a lab than stuck in an office, CAD isn't terribly exciting after 15years. Buuuut I'll take what I can get.
Take care of yourself Cduck.
It's good to hear things are looking up for you man.

I was getting less than half what a Masters degree should have gotten me...I was lucky to get anything given that I graduated right when the bubble burst and shit hit the fan.

And yes, when you have a job, recruiters will find you and try to poach you. Its a kind of sick validation that your skills are in demand and a really dumb catch-22, "If they're in a job already they must be desirable, I should poach them", "If they're not in a job, there must be something wrong with them, better not bother".

On one hand, if you jumped ship right out the door it can be a good sign your skills are in high demand, especially if there is a large pay bump. On the other hand, it can also look bad on a resume (if it was <1yr I might not even consider listing it). If a good offer presents itself and you're willing to stick with it for at least a year, jump on it.
there is nothing wrong with jumping ship for 2x salary.

ever.

(note I said jumping ship not selling out. there's a different formula for selling out.)
If anyone is going to Gen Con can you check out the DnD DungeonScape / Codename:Morningstar booth and see if they are handing out beta keys.  If they are could you get me one? (if you don't want it for yourself).

It'd be really helpful.

Might be a bit late at this point...but I know that MissBiz and Pakman were both going to be there I think
I've been wanting to go to GenCon for ages, I haven't had the chance to go though.

Re: reverse engineering, I do that with control systems, it's fun. I'm glad you got a job, also glad it's a mechanical designer job that's relevant to your experience/career choice. And I agree, never anything wrong with jumping ship for 2x salary. I got my current job by jumping ship for 1.5x salary a couple years ago.

Duck, don't stick around a small company to long if the owner doesn't follow through.  The company, and therefore your earnings are limited by his lack of vision and understanding.

Crow's secret to financial gain: work two fulltime jobs.  Now, excuse me while I go disappear for another 3 months.

Yeah, there are videos too. Pretty much confirms the leak.

Not happy about Dark Pit. Very happy about Dr. Mario.
Zelda/Shiek are separate now  :o Srsly, fuck Rosaline, and get Daisy in there.
Goddamnit, all I want is Snake back.

IIRC They've already stated they're going to patch him in, with another character or two.

Patches aren't DLC, I can't snag the articles at work but Nintendo is being very cautious about doing any kind of paid first party DLC. I think there's some for Fire Emblem and maybe animal crossing.

Given what Nintendo has been doing recently with the WiiU (Free Digital game with purchase of another) - I would not be surprised if they were free.
