gonna get your PMS on dude?
you mixed up the letters but I was thinking about it but I don't think I want to spend any more time in school than I have to at this point.
I could really use some help, or at least someone to help me diagnose this if possible.

So, my roommate (not the girl, the other one), has noticeably gotten more and more stressed over the semester. It's been visibly changing as he's gotten quicker to judge, quicker to rise to an angry point, as well as physically throw stuff as well. He's still the same guy, don't get me wrong, and I know he hasn't been doing roids or drugs. All he's guilty of is occasionally getting drunk. Another thing to consider is that he's had to deal with moving multiple states from his family, friends, getting a job and becoming self-dependent, dealing with the bullshit that is our school, and holding down a job. He's not an unattractive guy either. 6'3", relatively skinny with some muscle tone, nice hair, good smile, etc. Despite all that, his self-esteem is through the floor. He regularly shuts himself down or says he did something stupid, he's told me he often thinks girls or classmates are judging him.

But tonight something serious happened.

We went to bed and I was getting ready to go to sleep. Then I heard banging. I honestly thought it was a robber at first, banging on the window or trying to break down the door. I got up and checked at his room and heard him crying. So I went in, asked what was wrong, propped him up next to me and watched him let it out. He was talking about "feeling so alone" between sobs. It sounded like he was in borderline-pain. So I stayed there for about a half-hour, kept telling him he wasn't alone, and eventually convinced him to come to the kitchen with me so I could make him some tea.

The next hour was him telling me about how he feels isolated and how he's failing himself by not being social, when he quite literally added two people on facebook and met someone at a party the other night! He then shut himself down saying "yeah, I'm being stupid". One of many times this week. He opened up to me about having suicidal thoughts in high school and that he always felt like an outsider. I told him I thought this was something that needed to be addressed and asked him if he'd ever consider talking to a therapist about it. He turned me down at first, but after about an hour or talking he was open to it.

I need to know if I did anything wrong or if this is something I need to keep a close eye on.

Don't see how that can be construed as doing something wrong. Sounds like you were there to support him and hear him out when he was in a very ugly place. Your campus almost certainly has a counseling service (assuming your roommate is still in college) that you can direct him to or offer to look through the resources with him.

It sounds like what you did was incredibly astute, emphatic, and supportive.

It's pretty rare for young men to break down like that in the presence of a peer. That makes me think your room-mate is in great distress.

Getting some support and advice from a counselor is highly recommended.

Also, can you support him in self-care activities? Is he exercising? Eating right? Sleeping well? Outlets for stress or creative expression? Is he reaching out to his family, and if not, why not?

Definitely get him to see a counselor. There should be some local resources you can use to find a few that he can try out until he finds one he's comfortable talking to.

It sounds like he has some stuff from his past that he's never really dealt with and it's all built up to this point where he just can't deal with it anymore. I went through something similar recently and seeing a good counselor really helped.
