Kinda depends on whether whats in the crate is determined when you receive it or when you open it. I'm inclined to think the latter.

almost certainly when you open it or else that'd just be more information valve would have to keep track of.

Gaben confirmed quite some time ago that crate contents are random and is determined when it's unlocked.

Really? I heard there was some duplicate item bug where people got duplicates of the same crate, and the duplicates had exactly the same item when opened later.
