I have come into the possession of a 60's era Gibson Melody Maker, 3/4 size (19 frets), double cutaway, one prior owner (thanks, grandmom!), all stock. For the first time in my life, I think I need to find a pro luthier.

Sweet Big Grin Pretty rare to find a 60's 3/4 model with all stock components. What kind of condition is it in?

It's not mint, it's got a fair share of dings and crackled lacquer. But everything works and it sounds swell. When I'm not lazy I'll post a pic.

Eh, dings and scratches are to be expected. I wouldn't believe you if you said it was in mint condition Tongue. If the lacquer is cracked I would look into getting it refinished though, speaking of which what plans do you have for restoration/modification with the luthier?

I honestly have no idea. I've never had a real vintage guitar that I had to think about such things as action and tonality. I picked up guitar almost 3 years ago now as a challenge and to fill the void left by grad school, so I'm entirely self-trained and unabashedly amateur. My main is an epiphone LP junior that I got off amazon in a package with an amp and cheeseball case for $99 bucks. My ears are so tin that I still love the hell out of that guitar. I think I'm going to put that in C or open G or whatever my current alternative fad is. My second is a curved-back acoustic made by some no-name startup company from 10 years ago that Gibson sued out of existence for patent infringement. My gramma gave me that one too because she's too old to fret the acoustic, and never liked that guitar.

So, this Melody Maker is a completely different beast for me. I feel guilty just touching it.  I know my gramma kept it in the attic for the past, I dunno, 30 years because she never liked how it played. So, I'm thinking a treasure like this might need some TLC that only a seasoned pro can provide. I've tried this guitar before about a year ago, and I didn't like how the low E buzzed against the frets. She said it was always that way, and never let me try to adjust anything (she used to stick a toothpick under it). So, that was one thing I thought I would need to get looked at.

Needless to say, the first thing I did when I got it home (and out of her sight) was try to jam on it. Oh, it buzzed like a bee. So I loosened the strings, raised the bridge (mostly on the low-E side), and re-seated the strings. Suddenly, it screams.
So!  How about those Habs!?!?
